In recognition of Memorial Day, we will be closed Saturday, May 27th and Monday, May 29th so we can spend time with our families.
As we reflect on Memorial Day, I am reminded of a breath taking sight when the art installation "Horizons" projected images of poppies amongst the architecture at The National WWI Museum and Memorial. As thousands of people gathered at Union Station for the 2023 NFL Draft, we were reminded of the great sacrifices made before us.
Why poppies? Poppies became the flower of remembrance and a symbol of resilience thanks the most famous poem to emerge from WWI, “In Flanders Fields” by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. McCrae worked within sight of poppies blooming across old battlefields and fresh graves when he crafted the poignant testament to the sacrifices of all who were fighting in the war. They served as a reminder of the sacrifice of those who have lost their lives on the battlefields while representing the hopeful transition towards a more peaceful future.
In 1920, the Poppy became the U.S. national emblem of remembrance. You can see these flowers powerfully displayed inside the Museum and Memorial where nine thousand poppies lie under the Paul Sunderland Bridge, each representing 1,000 combatant deaths during WWI.
